To identify risk factors that may lead to an increase in inpatient sleep apnoea (SA) referrals. A retrospective medical record review identified patients who were treated for SA at a tertiary-care hospital between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2009. The review of medical records was done to identify relevant clinical variables, including demographics, comorbidities, and clinical outcomes. Data were extracted from hospital medical records and analysed by univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. A total of 124 patients were diagnosed with SA during the study period. The rate of SA increased during the study period, and was significantly associated with polysomnography (PSG) Apnoea-Hypopnoea Index (AHI) ( p = 0.02). Respiratory-related hospitalisations (odds ratio = 4.6, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.7-12.8) and emergency room visits (odds ratio = 4.4, 95% CI 2.0-9.7) were more frequent in patients with SA who were older than 60 years ( p = 0.006 and p = 0.002, respectively). Smoker status and nocturnal drinking were not related to the incidence of SA ( p = 0.45 and p = 0.23, respectively). Patients
